  • 2021 Garden Tour will take place live, not virtual, on 6/12/21 from 11 am to 2 pm.  Danielle reported that she and Joan are well on their way to getting the minimum 6 gardens to participate.  April 30 is deadline for recruits.  It will be a Covid-conscious and family-friendly event.
  • Kathie will submit grant request for $4000 for new gutters ($2700 + contingencies for dry rot, etc.) to city week of April 19.  She expects to hear back in early June, just in time to have a “B2B” type volunteer event to clean up neighborhood.  Per feedback in meeting, she will emphasize that RBCC has no-fee membership and allows many non-profits to use facility for free.

Liz Covey is a private-practice therapist, mental health consultant, and parent coach located in South Seattle. Liz is also a freelance writer, and has a monthly column in the South Seattle Emerald called “Ask A Therapist”. She is a former Rainier Beach resident, and was a recipient of the goodwill of RBCC through her work with the Rainier Beach Girl Scouts troop.

Liz discussed “How to Stay Sane during Crazy Times.”  She focused to coping tactics and habits to address one’s body, mind, emotional and spiritual needs.  She told members that it is important to recognize worrisome emotions, accept that this is how you feel, ask yourself why you might feel that way and what you need now to feel better.

Per a request from Keegan, Liz will send to RBCC links for “Alternatives to Therapy” for low-cost mental health options.

Announcements

  • Vicki Gezon told members about the Emerald City Food Not Bombs food give-away event that takes place at 3100 Alaska every Tuesday starting 11:30 and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday starting at noon.  There is produce and other groceries as well as prepared food that is excellent quality

  • 2021 Budget Overview – Gerd reported that expected revenue would only be about $700 (the amount we took in last year from the Arts and Crafts Fair).  Expenses are expected to total $5,500, so she anticipates a net reduction in income of about $4,300.
  • Membership ideas for how we should tap Seattle’s Neighborhood Matching Funds for 2021.  Question to be answered is how will we accrue volunteer hours without Bridge to Beach event.  VFW has expressed interest in helping with our $ match.  Ideas include:
    • New gutters (est. $2,700)
    • ADA-standard access ramps study assessment.

Gary Olson of Seattle Watershed Alliance (SWA).  SWA is working to bring folks from the various watersheds together to learn about, protect and improve the many watersheds in Seattle.  Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has improvement plans for the Taylor Creek watershed in the near future.  This is a good time for us to learn about and have a voice in this effort and Gary reviewed the SPU project on Taylor Creek and Dead Horse Canyon.  RBCC will reach out to cody.nelson@seattle.gov to have SPU include our input in their plans and get an update from them.  For more info in the meantime, check out. https://www.seattle.gov/utilities/neighborhood-projects/taylor-creek

Ellen Phillip-Angeles from Kubota Garden Foundation provided a brief update on the Mapes Creek project.  The Foundation has gotten a 3 year grant to study the flows, floods and deposits that the park’s ponds and parking lot suffer following strong rains.  The study and proposed solutions should be completed by early 2022.

Announcements

  • Donovan announced that a food drive that VFW and United Presbyterian Church are conducting.  They are taking food collections T and F from 10 am to 1 pm.
  • Alan reported that RBCC’s letter in support of the Volunteer Park ampitheatre rebuild must have helped.  The project is to start soon.

Featured Speakers – Link to speaker presentations

Ryan Calkins, Commissioner, Port of Seattle (30 minutes) – Ryan works as a nonprofit professional at Ventures, a charitable organization that supports low-income entrepreneurs to start and grow their businesses in the Puget Sound area. For more than a decade, Ryan ran an import and distribution company in Seattle that was recognized for its industry-leading sustainability initiatives. In 2007, he formed Seattle Microfinance Organization (SeaMo) a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to capital for entrepreneurs with limited economic resources.

Michael Gordon (15 minutes) is a South Seattle resident and entrepreneur who is dedicated to improving the safety at the Rainier Beach Safeway and its parking lot. After selling his business in 2020, he is focused on and invested in giving back to the Rainier Beach community. He’ll address current efforts by the city and local organizations. With the recent surge in violence during the pandemic, he shares how we can reach a common goal to improve safety and opportunity for our neighborhood.

Speaker: Jamie Ptacek, Lead Organizer for Futurewise’s Washington Can’t Wait Campaign. With a background in climate science and community organizing, Jamie has been working to build a base of support among individual constituents and partner organizations across the state to update Washington’s Growth Management Act (GMA) during this legislative session. The updates that the Washington Can’t Wait Campaign has brought forward with our organizational partners seek to incorporate policy in the GMA that would address climate change, housing affordability, and environmental justice. Jamie will be discussing the Washington Can’t Wait Campaign, the policy changes being advocated for, and offer opportunities for folks to get involved in this work

Randi Eseltine, Director of Community Engagement with YouthCare presented information about the organization and upcoming shelter relocation.  YouthCare works to end youth homelessness and to ensure that young people are valued for who they are and empowered to achieve their potential. And now, to accommodate the Seattle-King County Public Health Department’s COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, YouthCare’s South Seattle Shelter will be relocating to the Rainier Beach area in January 2021.

Olivia Reed and Gloria HatcherYouth & Community Organizer, Rainier Valley Food Bank to discuss recent programs and volunteer opportunities. The RVFB opened  in 1991 as a volunteer-led neighborhood pantry serving 50 families a week. Founded as Northwest Community Services, the organization experienced a rapid rise in demand as the nation’s economy began to decline in 2008. In response to this huge increase in the number of families in need of food in our neighborhood, the board changed the organization’s name to Rainier Valley Food Bank, and hired its first professional executive director in 2009.  Links to participate in programs and services available on website.  Contact Gloria at gloria@rvfb.org for more information.

Featured Speaker:  In 2019, Kubota Garden Foundation funded the Kubota Garden Master Plan Update, hiring consultants to lead a broad community and city outreach process to help assess the current garden and provide guidance for its future design and development. KGF Board President, Joy Okazaki and the consultant team joined us to present their findings and highlight some of the recommendation to guide improvement for the next 20-30 years.

New Business :

  • We were able to reach a quorum which allowed us to take a vote for members of the nominating committee. All votes submitted via the Survey Monkey poll were cast for the nominated members: JoAnn as lead, with Alan and Su as additional members of the committee. No write-ins were received. Two members were unable to access the poll during the meeting, but were comfortable voicing their vote publicly, which brought us up to 15 votes (plus the 13 received via the poll).

The son of the first black-owned photography studio in the Northwest, Omari Salisubry hails from a long line of visual storytellers. 52 countries and counting, Omari is a true global citizen working in media across the continent of Africa, the middle east, and Europe for Media Zone, Clouds Media Group, and Status Communications. No matter where Omari finds himself across the globe, he will always call Seattle home. Omari is a proud native of Seattle’s Central District and a graduate of James A. Featured Speaker: Omar Akkari is the Shoreline Street Ends (SSE) Program Coordinator  for the City of Seattle Department of Transportation.  The SSE improves public access, protects unique views, enhances habitat, supports maritime industry and fosters stewardship to create long-lasting community assets.  Omar shared photos of current projects that restore public access to shoreline.  The SSE is helping home owners to bring public spaces into compliance.

    • Building: (Gerd) The stolen generator will be replace and stored in the storage room which needs to be cleaned out.  The generator is important because it is part of our local community emergency plan.  Donations are welcome to help defray the cost of the $500 deductible.

  • Review of new website (Alan) screen shared and showed the wonderful new website.
  • The need for a new generator was reviewed (Kathy Weibel).  It is source community of power in case of major emergency such as an earth quake.
  • Member feedback on last month’s speaker, Mark Solomon.  People felt his presentation was interesting and relevant.  Of especial interest were the visual details and clarification of legal terminology.
  • Membership was asked to share Ideas for future speakers

John Stafford of 37th District Democrats presented a non-partisan summary of 2020 Washington State Legislative Session.  Although some important legislation plans were passed, Mr. Stafford stated that not many very high impact acts were passed.  We can do a great deal this session however financial deficit due to Covid created urgent problems not originally anticipated.  We are facing 5 crisis; public health, economic recession, budget crisis, racial justice, and climate change. He suggested that we should look at balance budget without austerity, new progressive taxation, aggressively address climate change, address issues of racial injustice.
