The team at Northwest SEED would like to share an exciting opportunity that may be of interest to your community. In partnership with Seattle City Light, Northwest SEED is launching the next round of Solarize campaigns in Seattle! Solarize is a community-led effort designed to designed to accelerate the installation of solar energy systems, mobilize residents and communities around the benefits of solar energy, and tackle the barriers to widespread solar adoption. Through Solarize, local communities are coming together to achieve significant discounts through the group purchase of solar systems.

Since Northwest SEED launched Solarize Washington in 2010, the program has had a demonstrable impact on our state’s solar industry:
· 136 solar installations achieved to date by Solarize participants
· 602 kilowatts of new solar capacity installed to date by Solarize participants
· More than 1,000 people educated through public workshops on solar power
· 100% increase in Seattle’s 2011 and 2012 annual solar installation rate
· $3.7 million invested in our local solar economy
· 14 permanent green jobs created

Northwest SEED’s Call for Partners to select the next Solarize neighborhood is now available online at www.solarizewa.org. Northwest SEED is seeking applications from neighborhood groups interested in serving as the community partner in a Solarize campaign. The Call for Partners asks groups to demonstrate the demand for Solarize in their neighborhood. Neighborhoods must be located within Seattle City Light’s service territory. As community partners, selected neighborhoods will receive assistance from Northwest SEED to competitively select a solar installer, conduct neighborhood outreach and education, implement a series of free workshops, and facilitate the installation of solar PV systems.

Why Solarize now? Prices are lower than ever, and solar is gaining serious traction in Seattle and surrounding areas. Also of importance – the sales tax exemption that currently applies to solar installations is set to expire June 30, 2013 – which means we have less than one year to ensure that solar-interested people like yourself have all the information they need to access that incentive before it disappears. Participants will also benefit from a 30% federal income tax credit, a state production incentive, and utility net metering – plus the Solarize discount!

How to proceed…
· As an individual homeowner interested in Solarize: Contact a sustainability group or community group in your neighborhood and show your support—encourage them to apply to be a community partner! Your support will help strengthen your neighborhood’s community partnership application. If you are unsure who to contact in your neighborhood, a list of organizations who have received the Call for Partners is attached to this email.
· As a community group interested in being a community partner: Share this opportunity with your membership to assess interest in your community. Submit an Intent to Apply form by Wednesday October 17, and Northwest SEED will connect you to other groups in your area interested in participating. Full applications are due Wednesday October 24.

Questions? Submit your questions to alex@nwseed.org by Wednesday October 17. Northwest SEED will post answers in FAQ format on the Solarize Washington website (www.solarizewa.org) by Friday October 19th.

We look forward to working with you!

Picturing Garlic Gulch

University of Washington graduate student, Nellie Roe, explored Garlic Gulch in
1915 for material for her thesis “The Italian Immigrant in Seattle.” Some of her
conclusions strike us today as decidedly subjective, if not downright condescending.
For example:

“Those from southern Italy are as sunny in disposition as the climate from which
they come, and never look into the future, tho their brothers from the North are
more provident. They are like children in their simplicity, and in their trusting
always to luck and living ever in the present.”

“Perched high against the hill overlooking Rainier Valley, we find Italian cottages
with every inch of available space around them planted in early vegetables.” Nellie
Roe, Courtesy of Univ. of Wash. Special Collections.

Still, Ms. Roe illustrated her opus with charming line drawings of the community,
presumably her own.

SouthendSeattle.com is featuring a series of our illustrated articles on Garlic
Gulch, beginning with this introduction
project, or see our own website
